Yahoo Answers has eyes on ex-Google Answers researchers

This makes perfect sense. Google is closing its QnA site, Google Answers. Yahoo has been actively building popularity of their Yahoo Answers. Naturally, a smart move for Yahoo will be inviting these talented ex-Google Answers researcher to join them. And they did exactly that. In their own words,

We believe in the power of community; in people helping people get answers to their questions.

That sounds so right. They even set up a Yahoo! Group for former Google Answer Researchers for the new bloods. With some much efforts and emphasizes put on Yahoo Answers by Yahoo, Yahoo Answers will continue to grow to be the leader in this sector. Heck, I gonna put more attention in my participation in Yahoo Answers.

Google Answers no more

Say goodbye to Google Answers. It’s official. Google has decided to end Google Answers. No new question will now be accepted and new answers are only permitted until the end of the year.

First of all, let me explain what Google Answers is. Google Answers is a QnA web site where people can post questions on just about anything and in turn get answered by some other people who have knowledge on the matter. In fact, Microsoft, Yahoo and Amazon all have their own QnA site. Google Answers is a bit different whereby the questions are answered by qualified researchers. Hence, a fee is charged for every answered question.

QnA web site is the kind of web sites that benefits everyone. People get answers to their questions. Experts use their experience and expertise to help people out. QnA web sites are so popular and effective that it is sometimes being considered as part of social media optimization effort by experts, publishers, bloggers to establish their reputation and credibility in their respective niche.

So, why do Google give this up? Is this a sign that “diversity” in Google finally backfired?  Maybe this is a good thing for Google. Maybe Google will now stop itching to get their hands on every crap under the sun.

If you are interested, check out Windows Live QnA, Yahoo Answers, Amazon Askville.

Google gives away free digital photo frames

Premier Google Adsense publishers (who earn heaps of green from advertising) got a gift from Google. A digital photo frames!

This is a very nice thank-you from Google. It’s holiday season, isn’t it? Time to show some love to people who make your bank account fat love you.

On the other end, small publishers like me would consider ourselves lucky if we would ever break even. :P

Google went shopping again: Jotpot is now in their bag

Now, let’s talk about other news for a second. Not as exploding as Google-buys-Youtube, Google has today acquired Jotspot, a well known wiki hosting web site.

What is wiki, you ask? Of course you heard wikipedia and the like. Wiki is basically a knowledge sharing site where users participate actively to contribute information. It’s something like negative feedback, self-correcting information system using wisdom of crowd.

Ok, that’s a lot of crap. With Jotspot in the family, Google expands their productivity suite offering, along with Writely, Gmail, Google Spreadsheet, Google Calendar. They now almost have a complete suite to compete with Microsoft Office.

One good thing for normal users like us when Google goes shopping is the acquired product/service becomes free. Yes, Jotspot is now free.

One time waster you can do with Google

Google is omniscient. Not so much like God, but close. So, you use Google to do your research, search for cheap coupons, check local weather and stuff. What other things you can do with Google when you are bored? Well, egosurfing is one. Egosurfing means googling one own’s name. Egosurfing satisfies your ego and in the same time surprises you on how much “digital dirt” you have online. Try it.
While we’re on the subject, tell me about your favourite time waster online.

*Damn, this blog hasn’t got indexed by Google yet.
